salted roads...or roads made of salt?

This is NOT really a love post.  So my apologies.

This morning I walked out to get the newspaper and saw this:
and this:

Yes my friends and civic leaders of the city of North Salt Lake...that is salt on the road...NOT ice...NOT snow...S-A-L-T aka sodium chloride aka NaCL.

It was at least an inch if not two inches thick. I backed out of the driveway and started down my pretty steep hill to Valley View drive...as I came to the bottom of the hill and the stop sign and prepared to stop I started to slide down my hill...onto Valley View.  Luckily, no one was driving down the road at that moment, but as I turned onto Valley View, I thought, "huh...that's odd...isn't the point of salting the road so that we DON'T slip?"

I realize I live on a curvy steep hill that is not driving friendly when ice and snow is involved.  HOWEVER...I do think that this was a bit overboard.  I think I'm going to take these photos to the city building.  All this salt is A) ruining the road B) making my car dirty...city of NSL-you're paying for my car wash and C) acting as a catalyst to the rusting process on my car (not that is is rusty in many places, but there are a few spots...and this is not helping).  So perhaps you and Maaco should get together and get me a new paint job.

Sincerely,
Brooke Lee Russell

February 9th:
The OCEAN.

the

I.
LOVE.
THE.
OCEAN.
I mean...
really,
really,
really,
L-O-V-E.
I feel so at home when I'm at the ocean.
It is ~70% of our planet...
and ~50% of our bodies...
why wouldn't it feel like home?
I've only experienced the Atlantic and the Pacific
(and the Caribbean Sea...which I guess isn't the ocean but is it part of the Atlantic?)
(Indian, Arctic, Southern...
someday we will meet.)

For now my favorite is
the Pacific.
I loved living in Boston.
Loved everything about it.
But as gorgeous as it is...
(especially from the New England coastline and the Caribbean sea if we're counting that as the Atlantic...if not then it is a CLOSE 2nd to the Pacific)
it never felt the way it did when I was in Hawaii, California, Mexico, Alaska or Washington.
I don't know what it is about the Pacific
but we belong together.
Rialto Beach-Pacific Ocean-off the coast of the Olympic Peninsula
Sunset beach-not my photo-can't find my Hawaii photos-not good
My photos of the ocean from Mexico are not digital, nor are my California ones or my Alaska ones...GEEZ!
Google!

There is only one other place where I feel more at home than the ocean
but I'll save that for another February day.

It calms my soul to be at/in the ocean.
(water in general has the affect on me)
It really does.
Life makes more sense.
My thinking is clearer.
I'm just happier.
And as I sit there watching the waves I know that God exists.
I know that this world, though designed as a playing field of sorts...
was also designed so that we could see how much He does love us.
I feel so small at the ocean.
Yet, knowing that God loves me...and knows me, Brooke, that smallness is not a bad thing.
I see that there is so much more beyond this world.
And so I remember to never give up.

i love the ocean.

Goodness in the world!
I know I've already listed what I love for the day, but I could not resist sharing this.
I am so sad I do not have a photo, but I couldn't get a good one with my phone while driving.
As I was driving home from the grocery store this morning I pulled behind a car.
A four door sedan of some sort, white, nondescript...
...EXCEPT...
for the
FIVE.
ADORABLE.
little old ladies
(the were truly little)
riding in the car.
No Driving Miss Daisy for these broads...
two up front...
three in the back.
It just made me smile to see that.
but then...
yes...
it gets better...
The pulled into the salon!
Five adorable little old ladies going to get their hair done together.
What could be better than salon day with your friends!?
I just laughed out and grinned at the goodness in the world that exists...
EVEN IN FEBRUARY!
I know that regardless of what happens today I have that gem to sustain me.

Not too mention the sun is shinning, the sky is blue and I drove to work with my sunroof open!
